Umzumbe Municipality needs a library

The mayor said the issues faced by the youth are different from the ones that were faced by the youth of 1976.

Umzumbe Municipality does not have a library of its own and is dependent on mobile libraries which only benefit a few schools.

This was revealed by Umzumbe Municipality mayor Bongani Nyuswa during a Youth Day celebration at Rossetenville Community Hall in Ward 14 on Friday last week.

Nyuswa was speaking about the challenges faced by the youth of today. The mayor said the issues faced by the youth are different from the ones that were faced by the youth of 1976.

“We thank the youth of 1976 for the role they played in influencing the youth of today and the form of freedom they have. However, the youth of today has their own challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality,” said Nyuswa.

In Umzumbe, added Nyuswa, there are still a number of pupils that occupy one classroom than what is usually normal. He said the overcrowding is caused by the lack of classrooms in schools in Umzumbe.

“We also lack facilities such as laboratories so pupils can’t do scientific studies. The older generation also lacked these so that is why we need to get these facilities, libraries for the youth of Umzumbe,” said Nyuswa.

Meanwhile, organisations such as the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) were invited. Also, South Coast’s Phindile ‘P’ Phewa who is a radio personality at Ukhozi FM was the guest speaker of the day. Phewa encouraged young people to use social media wisely. She said social media is a tool that can make or break you.

“Through social media, you can get the job of your dreams and you can also die of depression. Do not believe everything you see and read on social media because people live fake lives, they want to trend and also share unverified information. Whether you are promoting your business, talent, or work – do not pay attention to the number of reactions to your posts because the number of likes to your posts does not reflect the number of people who saw it. You can have an impact on someone who did not react to your post. Whatever you post, make sure it best represents you,” said Phewa.
