Track Torque: Sainz makes sure at Silverstone

Carlos Sainz won his first Grand Prix.

The British Grand Prix was won in grand fashion by Carlos Sainz, who persevered all weekend and was thrilled to achieve his first Grand Prix win ever.

The win was well deserved as Sainz had been trying hard not only this weekend but several times in the recent past and as come very close only to be disappointed in the end.

It is to be noted that the race had been stopped after only two laps, after a dramatic coming together of three cars.

Zhou Guanyu in his Alfa Romeo was very lucky not to suffer serious injuries when his car flew upside down, over the tyre barriers and into the catch fence, fortunately he was okay.

The race had to be re-started with positions in the order of the original grid.

In second place Sergio Perez did a huge job for Red Bull by making up for the performance of the damaged car of his teammate Max Verstappen.

He had damaged the under floor of his car very badly which reduced the aerodynamic downforce, which slowed him considerably.

Verstappen only finished seventh at the flag.

Meanwhile the British crowd were thrilled to watch an excellent drive by Lewis Hamilton in his much improved Mercedes. He made it onto the podium in third position.

Charles Leclerc had a difficult drive and was disappointed to fall back into fourth place after the Ferraris had been one-two earlier in the race.

Fernando Alonso drove well, doggedly keeping Lando Norris behind him during the long duel that they had.

Another very good drive was that by Mick Schumaker who finished in eighth behind Verstappen.

These were his first world champion points in his career, very well earned.

Sebastian Vettel and Kevin Magnussen were the last two point scoring positions, in ninth and tenth respectively.

The Grand Prix weekend was held under mixed weather conditions, it being very wet during qualifying, but dry on Sunday for the race.

Silverstone is always a great challenge as it is still one of the fastest circuits in the world, with some very demanding high speed corners, especially when wet.

The next Grand Prix is in Austria on July 10 and it will be interesting to see if the FIA will interfere with the regulations, in an effort to stop porpoising of the cars at high speed, which will actually help Mercedes.

Drivers: 1 Max Verstappen 181; 2 Sergio Pérez 147; 3 Charles Leclerc 138; 4 Carlos Sainz 127; 5 George Russell 111; 6 Lewis Hamilton 93.

Teams: 1 Oracle Red Bull Racing 328; 2 Scuderia Ferrari 265; 3 Mercedes AMG Petronas 204; 4 McLaren 73.
