ANC provincial elective conference postponed
It will now be held from July 22 to July 24.
The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has rescheduled its ninth provincial elective conference. The conference which would have convened from July 15 to July 17 will now be held from July 22 to July 24.
According to ANC provincial spokesperson, Nhlakanipho Ntombela, the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) rescheduled the conference with the aim of ensuring that all Branch General Meetings (BGMs) are convened and allow the process of nomination of leadership to unfold.
“At this stage all the BGMs that have concluded their duties were convened successfully. Furthermore, the PEC decided to set the cut-off date of BGMs to convene to July 10. Adherence to these dates will ensure that all ANC internal processes, including disputes and verification, are done with diligence and timeously. The ANC has a responsibility to ensure that its conference is held within the ambit of its constitution and all its prescripts. Equally, it is mandatory for the movement to advance democracy and provide a conducive platform for its members to engage each other,” said Ntombela, adding that the party is on the rebuilding, renewal, and unity trajectory, which needs to ensure that all systems are in place ahead of the conference.
He said they have been working within the new membership system to curtail a lot of complaints, including allegations of membership rigging and gatekeeping in their branches.
Meanwhile, former ANC deputy chairperson of the George Mbhele branch in Umzumbe, Siboniso Armstrong Duma, was nominated as the provincial chairperson.
Duma was nominated by the John Mchunu branch in Durban. According to sources, aside from Duma, the position of the provincial chair is expected to be contested by the current chairperson, Sihle Zikalala, Treasury MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube, former ANC Newcastle mayor, Ntuthuko Mahlaba, Amazulu Football Club boss Sandile Zungu, and former director-general of KwaZulu-Natal provincial government Nhlanhla Ngidi.
Meanwhile, the ANC’s Ntombela said they have full confidence that all branches which have not convened will be able to meet the new deadline. He added that already, they are at the threshold of the branches that have convened successful BGMs and they are encouraged by the way members are committed to the processes of the organisation.
“With only a few branches that have not sat, the ANC sees so much energy coming in terms of compliance,” said Ntombela.
