Gamalakhe career expo postponed

A new date is yet to be announced.

The Career Expo which was set to run from July 27 to July 29 at Gamalakhe Community in Ward 5 has been postponed.

The expo which was organised by non-profit organisation, YAMS (Youth development, Art, Music, and Sports), was meant to be attended by Grade 9 and 10 pupils from the local high schools.

According to Thabiso Mthembu of YAMS, the Department of Education declined the organisation host the expo due to the practical work taking place this week in some of the high schools.

“The expo will be postponed to a later date. We will be in contact about the new expo date shortly,” said Mthembu.

He added that they want to host the expo because they find it important to stimulate and encourage young minds.

Mthembu said YAMS had approached professionals in the community to participate in talks with pupils, saying that the experts included doctors, nurses, drivers, police, petrol attendants, barbers, photographers, actors, teachers, and many more.

“The idea of the expo came to us on seeing the need for a bridge of information for schools in townships and rural areas. YAMS started with the objectives of creating and empowering skills development in the community, to facilitate a bridge for the creation of jobs, to engage the community through upliftment programmes, to create awareness and education for fitness,” said Mthembu.

He added that they also aim to work with both government and the private sector to facilitate better job information and accessibility, to work hand-in-hand with members of the community in facilitating a platform for effective co-existence and communal harmony.

YAMS started its operations in 2016 under the name South Coast Sports Trust, but operates as YAMS.

Mthembu added the organisation was very excited to host its first Mandela Day event at the TB Molefe Stadium in Gamalakhe recently.

“The event was largely sponsored by Coca-Cola as well as Sebenza Farms, the local municipality, local library, various local artists, and volunteers from the community. The day included a reading station where stories were read to the children, jumping castles and a variety of games, planting plants around the stadium, performances by many local artists as well as painting the jungle gyms and the local old age centre,” said Mthembu.
