Photographer Aphiwokuhle is a nominee in women’s awards

Aphiwokuhle Moyo faces the challenge of constantly being called a female photographer, and not a photographer because the industry is male-dominated.

Photographer Aphiwokuhle Moyo of Margate has been nominated for the Sebenza Women Awards, in the Sebenza Women Champion Category.

Moyo, who owns Behind the Lens Photography said she was in shock when she heard the news of her nomination.

She told Fever that her love for photography started when she moved to Murchison to live at her grandmother’s house in 2014.

According to the organisers, Sebenza Women Awards was formed to celebrate women’s achievements and also increase the visibility of the strides women are making in their various professions and communities.

The former Wesbury College of Science pupil said the nomination meant a lot to her because it is a reminder that she is on the right track.

“It also reminds me to believe in myself, but most importantly this nomination is for my hometown. I’m grateful, that they have been the most supportive group of people. If I take it home it will be in honour of them because my business is a great success because majority of my clients are from my hometown. It is also an honour to all those who support and love my work because I am who I am because of their unwavering support and love. So I’m grateful to everyone for everything, the nomination is a reflection of gratitude for the milestone,” she said.

She added that her nomination came after she submitted her business profile for consideration, saying that she did not think she would be one of the 71 shortlisted nominees out of 567 entries.

“I woke up to check the Sebenza Women Facebook page only to see the first category with my name on it. I wanted to scream and shout but I couldn’t because people were sleeping in the house. I was filled with joy and disbelief mostly. I didn’t expect it,” she said.

Moyo added that although her goal right now is to exceed her potential in her business, but she also hopes to help introduce a creative space for creatives from the South Coast.

She said through her business, she wants to combat unemployment since she has collaborated and worked with a lot of women to help them establish themselves in their respective fields and help them discover their potential.

“I also would love to inspire other women to be comfortable in male-dominated industries as I am constantly facing that challenge of being a female photographer and not a photographer because the industry is male-dominated,” she said.
