Ugu District Detective Commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya welcomed the conviction.

The Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Cyprian Mzindle (48) to life imprisonment for severely assaulting a 60-year-old woman in October 2020.
According to Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, Phyllis Lillian Mzindle was severely assaulted and found on the road in KwaMadlala near Umzumbe.
Mpinge said Mzindle was taken to Port Shepstone Hospital with severe head injuries which caused her to remain in a coma for a month until she died.
He added that a case of assault grievous bodily harm (GBH) was initially opened at SAPS Southport for investigation but was later changed to a murder case.
“A suspect who was from the same area and a distant relative, was identified and traced by Southport Detective Services and arrested at his place of employment in Port Shepstone. The investigating officer strongly opposed bail and the accused remained in police custody throughout his trail. After an intense and thorough investigation by Warrant Officer Chris du Plessis and Sergeant Sibongiseni Xaba of Southport Detective Service, Mzindle, was recently sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court to life imprisonment,” said Mpinge, adding that he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Meanwhile, Ugu District Detective Commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya welcomed the conviction, saying that it was as a result of the comprehensive investigation by the detectives.
Sibiya added that the sentence sends out a strong message to those perpetrators found guilty of gender based violence, saying that the penalty will be severe.
