Teaching the community about consumer rights
The consumer rights campaign was done in partnership with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in Ward 24 to empower community members of their rights as consumers.
“It is important for people to know what services there are in government as they are the consumers of these services.”
These were the words of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, when the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) presented the consumer rights campaign to the people of kwaNdwalane in Betania.
According to the Department, the consumer rights campaign was done in partnership with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in Ward 24 to empower community members of their rights as consumers.
“This initiative to educate was not only confined to consumer awareness however, EDTEA in the province brought on board various programmes they offer; ranging from environmental management awareness to opportunities available to young entrepreneurs,” said the department.
It added that consumers are entitled to receive goods or services that are of good quality, in good working order and free of any defects, and that comply with any applicable standards set under the Standards Act, No. 29 of 1993 or any other public regulation.
The Department added that at the consumer rights campaign, there was also a delegation led by RNM mayor Mqadi, Inkosi Sazi Ndwalane of the Ndwalane Traditional Council, RNM Speaker of Council, Zodwa Mzindle and senior government officials.
Meanwhile, as part of the campaign, the delegation handed over school shoes to beneficiaries in the area.
In his keynote address, the RNM mayor thanked the KZN Department of EDTEA for bringing the initiative to the people of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
