‘Identifying talent’

The department is also assisting in organising the World Table Tennis Championships to be hosted in Durban in May.

In the hopes of identifying a talented team that competes at the national championships next month, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture recently hosted the KZN Primary Schools’ Track and field Athletics Championships.

The championships were held last week at the Umsunduzi Athletics Track in Pietermaritzburg.
Pupils from all districts of the province competed in long jump, high jump, discus, shot-put, javelin as well as 100m sprint and other distance events.

Meanwhile, the department is also assisting in organising the World Table Tennis Championships to be hosted in Durban in May.
Last week, the organisers of the tennis championships hosted an event marking 84 days to the tournament in Durban, signifying 84 years since the competition was last hosted on the African soil in Egypt.

The competition here in South Africa will be hosted at the Durban ICC. The activities will start with a draw on May 18 followed by the actual tournament on May 20. This is an individual participation event as opposed to participation by country.
SA Table Tennis President Joe Karrim said with May being African Month, the competition would also be their way to celebrate the month. Speaking on behalf of eThekwini, Vusi Mazibuko said as Durbanites they were very excited to be opening their wings to the world, especially when looking at the big number of countries that would be here. He said the most important thing was that after the tournament we should see an increase of people participation in table tennis.
