Cable thief receives 6 years behind bars

The 35-year-old committed the crime in October 2022.

Margate station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert has welcomed the sentencing of Simphiwe “Geneza” Cele for theft of copper and electric cables at Jenkins Street in Margate.

According to Margate police spokesperson, Sergeant Sibu Ncane, the 35-year-old committed the crime in October 2022.

It is hoped that the sentence of six years imposed on a cable thief will serve as a deterrent to other criminals who tamper or destroy essential infrastructure by stealing copper or electric cables.

“The Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Cele. Through a thorough investigation, Detective Constable Vusani Shange of Margate Detective Services ensured an appropriate sentence was meted out by the court. Cele remained in police custody throughout his trial,” said Ncane.
Brigadier Slabbert who welcomed the sentence said it serves as a deterrent and as a precedent for other such cases involving theft of copper and electric cables.
