Humanitarian relief for flood victims in KwaDweshula
Temporary roofing materials were donated to affected families.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development along with Umzumbe Municipality recently handed over temporary roofing materials to KwaDweshula residents after the recent heavy rains.
Head of the Department of Social Development, Nelisiwe Vilakazi, said in collaboration with the municipal disaster response team, they have provided temporary roofing materials to facilitate the restoration of damaged homes, ensuring safe and secure living conditions for families.
Vilakazi said they have also intervened in over 32 households that were affected by the latest disaster.
“The department remains steadfast in its commitment to providing ongoing assistance to all those affected by the disaster. Continued collaboration with local municipalities and stakeholders will be prioritised to ensure efficient and effective delivery of humanitarian relief to impacted communities,” said Vilakazi.
Meanwhile, Umzumbe Municipality mayor, Bongani Nyuswa expressed gratitude for the department’s unwavering dedication to assisting the residents of Ward 1.
Nyuswa said he understands the extensive destruction and the dire circumstances faced by numerous families.
“Social workers from the department were deployed across all wards and their assessment revealed that the most affected area was KwaDweshula in Ward 1. Through the distribution of aid packages, the department aims to restore the community’s dignity and offer hope amidst trying times. These packages included food, blankets, and other provisions, addressing the immediate needs of the affected households. This is the effort of the caring government of the people, which has to ensure that no one goes to sleep on an empty stomach,” he said.
