Kids urged to enter spelling bee
Are you between the ages of seven and 12 years and know your alphabets? If yes, Aunt Zimmy (Zimkhitha Tshobonga) is inviting you to enter a spelling bee competition.
Homework Club with Aunt Zimmy will be hosting a spelling bee competition at the Ward 5 community hall in Gamalakhe on Saturday, August 5 from 10am.
Are you between the ages of seven and 12 years and know your alphabets? If yes, Aunt Zimmy (Zimkhitha Tshobonga) is inviting you to enter.
Tshobonga said the idea of a spelling bee competition has always been on her mind.
She said she did not know how to go about implementing it or making it a reality.
“But thank God for Homework Club because it opened a platform for me to implement my ideas and uplift the community at the same time. The spelling bee competition will also have food stalls which are small businesses owned by young people on the South Coast or in our community. The kids will benefit in many ways such as public speaking at a young age which will boost their confidence. They will learn new words which will add to their vocabulary and that will improve how they answer comprehension tasks at school in their respective subjects/languages,” said Tshobonga.
She added that they will also learn that a good challenge is worth all the energy and time in life.
“After all it will be a competition, some will win and some won’t but that should not discourage them but instead it must motivate them to do better next time. The competition is not limited to children in Gamalakhe because I believe that the South Coast has so much potential and I cannot wait to see that on August 5,” she said, adding that should the spelling bee be a success, she will make the competition an annual one.
She said she was mostly inspired to start the competition as she entered such contests in primary school.
“I won all those competitions in primary school because I was good. In doing a second edition of the spelling bee competition next year, we will go bigger and better because we will reference the upcoming competition,” said Tshobonga.
Tshobonga’s Homework Club with Aunt Zimmy won a Next Billionaire Award (TNB) under the category of Upcoming Business during an awards ceremony held at the Wild Coast Sun in December 2022.
