More than 150 schools benefitted from the initiative.
Umzumbe Municipality embarked on a campaign to donate uniforms to pupils from various schools in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day on July 18.
The mayor, Bongani Nyuswa said the campaign was aimed at promoting the importance of education, saying that more than 150 schools benefitted from the initiative.
Nyuswa said as part of the celebrations, the municipality visited schools such as Imbalencane Primary School, Mangquzuka High School, Mehlomnyama Primary School, Mgamule High School, Inkosi Mayiyana High School, Empola Primary School, Etsheni Primary School, Odeke Primary School, Mabuthela High School,
Lucas Memorial Primary School, Khathi High School, Dingimbiza Primary School, Nomakhanzana Primary School, Khanya High School, Phembukukhanya Primary School, Inhlasana Primary School, Siqhakazile Primary School and Mngomeni High School .
The mayor said the municipality worked with schools to identify pupils who come from troubled homes.
“Today we remember a hero and a pioneer of development. All the councillors scattered throughout the wards are changing people’s lives. Teachers will remember how the country turned after Dr Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela became the president. Education was one of the things he set to develop our nation. It is good that our children know about this and understand that education is the key to a better life,” he said.
Nyuswa also encouraged pupils to stay away from drugs, alcohol, and getting into friendships with misguided young people.
