Man sentenced for damaging infrastructure

The Scottburgh Regional Court recently sentenced Senzo Jerome Cele to 10 years imprisonment for damage to essential infrastructure.
Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said on January 11, Cele cut the fence which secured a cellphone tower at Nkulu Ward in Msinsini, causing extensive damage to the door of the container and the safe holding the batteries.
Mpinge said the cameras and alarm system were also destroyed.
“Surveillance footage that was retrieved led to the identification and arrest of Cele a few days later. He was also linked to a similar case in Umkomaas. The 10-year sentence was suspended for a period of five years on condition that Cele not be found in contravention of the terms of his sentence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” said Mpinge, adding that damage to any infrastructure is a criminal offence and offenders face imprisonment and or other punishments.
He said the investigating officer in the case was Detective Sergeant Mthoko Gumede of Msinsini Detective Service.
