Rugby coach bets on Boks’ World Cup win
Sabelo Myeza is the development officer for rugby in the South Coast region.
The Springboks will win the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
This was a sentiment shared by Sabelo Myeza who was recently appointed by KZN Rugby Union Development as the development officer for rugby in the South Coast region.
Myeza told Fever that looking at the selection of players and their depth, he does not doubt that the Springboks will retain their position as world champions.
Speaking on his recent appointment, the 29-year-old from Gcilima said his duties as the new development officer include growing rugby at underdeveloped schools by teaching children the sport and giving them more opportunities.
The former Olwandle High School pupil said being trusted with this position is an honour and privilege for him, saying that he is very excited.
He explained that his love for sports started when he was just nine years old.
“At that time I was playing soccer. My love for rugby started when I visited my mother in Gamalakhe. At that time I knew nothing about the sport but I loved the way it was played, so I joined a local rugby team. I would only train during holidays because I was attending Gcilima Primary School. At a young age, I played for Southern Natal U12, U13, U15, U17, U19, Vikings U20, Gamalakhe Rugby Club, South Coast Warriors Rugby Club and Amangcesha Rugby Club,” said Myeza, adding that after completing his matric, he was introduced to rugby coaching by Wilton Mtshali.
He said he started coaching at Olwandle High School, Phathwa Secondary School, saying that he is now at Delihlazo Primary School.
Myeza said rugby is the only work he does, saying that his goal is to bring back the culture of rugby in the Ugu District, to keep young children off the streets, and to also open opportunities for young rugby players.
“I would like to thank coaches, Wilton Mtshali, Thoko Shusha, Dawie Snyman, Mpumelelo Mbono and Niko Potgieter. They have made me who I am today and lastly my family for believing in me,” said Myeza.
