Golden moments for senior citizens
Taking the 2023 KZN Golden Games cup was Ilembe District Municipality, Amajuba District placed second, Umzinyathi District third, Uthukela District placed fourth and the hosting district, Ugu bagged fifth place.
Team Ilembe District Municipality was crowned champions of the 2023 Provincial Golden Games held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Thursday.
The 2023 KZN Golden Games saw thousands of athletic senior citizens flocking to Gamalakhe, to participate in the annual event, hosted by the Department of Sports, Art and Culture in partnership with the Department of Social Development.
Senior citizens from 11 districts competed in athletics, duck walk, dress-up, rugby ball throw, ball passing, ball relay, mlabalaba, football and netball which was introduced for the first time this year.
Taking the 2023 KZN Golden Games cup was Ilembe District Municipality, Amajuba District placed second, Umzinyathi District came in third, Uthukela District took fourth position, while the hosting district, Ugu bagged fifth place.
The Golden Games championships are for people 60 years and older.
The event’s main objective is to promote senior citizens’ well-being and encourage their physical and mental well-being.
It is organised annually by the KZN Department of Sports, Art and Culture led by MEC Ntuthuko Mahlaba together with the Department of Social Development, Office of the Premier, Department of Health, municipalities, and the provincial senior citizens’ forum.
