Remembering those who paid the ultimate price
This year, a Remembrance Parade will be held at the new Wall of Remembrance at the Port Edward Country Club at 11am on November 12.
In celebration of Remembrance Day, the Moths and Friends of the Moths from Splash Rock Shellhole in Port Edward will distribute poppies at Mac Banana this Saturday, November 11 from 9am.
Splash Rock Shellhole will host a memorial service at the Methodist Church Hall on Newport Road in Port Edward this Sunday, November 12.
Pastor John Pretorius (a Moth from Splash Rock Shellhole) will conduct the service at 8am.
This year, a Remembrance Parade will be held at the new Wall of Remembrance at the Port Edward Country Club at 11am on November 12.
The public is invited to join the ceremony to remember those veterans who have answered the Sunset Call.
According to the organisers, Remembrance Day is a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price and those veterans who have passed on.
“This was first started on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. A lady called Moina Belle Michael, who was so taken by a poem called In Flanders Fields, dedicated her life to remembering those who fought in World War I. Today, we remember all those who fought and are fighting in all conflicts. We, in South Africa, remember all who have fought for the South African Armed Forces. The Red Poppy has become the symbol by which this event is commemorated each year. The South African Legion and the Moths are dedicated to raising funds to assist veterans and their families. Please join us in commemorating Remembrance Day,” said the organisers, adding that all denominations are welcome.
