Swimmer represents SA in Rwanda
In the swimming competition in Rwanda, he was placed third in his 200m freestyle race and won a bronze medal for South Africa.
Margate’s Tristan Horsley was recently selected to be part of the team that represented South Africa at the eighth Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Championship held in Rwanda over the weekend.
The 16-year-old Southcity Christian College pupil was against swimmers from 10 other African countries.
He was placed third in his 200m freestyle race and won a bronze medal for South Africa.
The swimmer’s mother, Kim Horsley, told Fever that Tristan was selected by Swimming South Africa (SSA), saying that he has also won the Male Swimmer of the Year award for 2023 at Southcity Christian College.
She said Tristan has also received colours for Ugu District Aquatics as well as his KZN Aquatics colours for swimming.
Speaking about his passion for swimming, Tristan said when he around the age of five, he started swimming lessons.
“Before that, I was extremely scared of swimming in any ocean, and pool. I hated getting my head underwater. Those lessons taught me how to swim, how to feel confident in the water, and how to handle situations in the water. This is when I started enjoying swimming when I realised that it wasn’t scary at all and when I realised that I had potential. My swimming club, Margate Swimming Club and my coach Gerhard Labuschagne, have taught me everything I know about competitive swimming and I am thankful to him for guiding and coaching me to reach this level of skill and confidence,” said Tristan.
He added that he was grateful and blessed to have had the opportunity to swim for his country in Rwanda and to be able to travel abroad while meeting new people.
