Rallying behind cancer victims
Provincial director of SAACA KZN, Madeleine Pretorius, said the initiative will celebrate cancer survivors, support the warriors and remember those who lost their lives in fight against cancer.
In observing World Cancer Day, the Southern Africa Animal Cancer Association (SAACA) in KZN will host the Lace Up for Cancer initiative at the Wild Coast Sun on February 17.
World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4.
Provincial director of SAACA KZN, Madeleine Pretorius, said the initiative will celebrate cancer survivors, support the warriors and remember those who lost their lives in the fight against cancer.
Pretorius said on the day participants will play golf, beach volleyball, and participate in a 1km and 2km run or walk.
She added that there will also be yoga, zumba, aerobics, horse riding and artists who will be painting in pink.
She said the artwork will be auctioned in aid of cancer, adding that all proceeds made during the event will go towards cancer initiatives.
“Salome Meyer will pilot a group of people to show that our community can stand together in unity in support of cancer initiatives by Cancer Alliance SA. Individuals in the community, schools, and other cancer organisations will take part by arranging their event in aid of raising funds for cancer. The shade of pink promises to be an opportunity not to miss to do your part for cancer and this while we have fun,” she said.
Pretorius added that the community of Port Edward was amazingly doing a walking trail and mass walk on the main street of Port Edward.
She said this was organised by Meissa Welman and Nikkita Welman.
“Salome Meyer is proud of this small community on the KZN South Coast and Eastern Cape to cover this event on their page and in their magazine. She is extending the invitation to all 45 organisations under the Cancer Alliance umbrella to join this initiative by SAACA,” she said.
She added that SAACA aims to raise funds with a passion for cancer research on animals at Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria as cancer in humans and animals are related.
