R190 million facelift for Izingolweni road

The construction period of the project is estimated at 24 months.

A contract worth R190 million was recently handed over to a service provider for the rehabilitation of Main Road P284 which links Port Edward and Izingolweni.

It was handed over by KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka on Tuesday this week at Qhina Sports Ground in Izingolweni.

MEC Hlomuka said the total length of the road is 37.86km, saying that Main Road P284 serves as a crucial bypass, diverting traffic from the R61 in Southbroom to the N2-21, which leads to Harding and Kokstad.

As it’s strategically positioned, Hlomuka said the P284 forms an integral part of the macro network, facilitating mobility between Pietermaritzburg, Harding and Kokstad to the Eastern Cape via Bizana.

He said the construction period of the project is estimated at 24 months.

“The road has reached its lifespan and was recently damaged by heavy rains. The rehabilitation forms part of eliminating the potholes on major strategic roads in the province. The rehabilitation of this road will allow for easy movement of goods between Izingolweni and Port Edward as there is high agricultural production in the area,” said Hlomuka.

He added: “The community of Izingolweni will benefit from job creation and skills development, serving as a key driver for employment and training in various skills.”
