NPO needs help to feed 370 learners
Learners who benefit are from Qhinqa, Thobigunya High School, Shibase, uMthini Primary School and Sikunye Crèche.
A non-profit organisation, Mbali The Village, is feeding 370 learners in the Izingolweni area.
Founded by Bongi Nzama in July 2023, the organisation provides breakfast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Nzama said this was an attempt to reduce hunger in the community.
She said the organisation believes that giving children a healthy start in life, no matter where they are born or the circumstances of their birth, is the moral obligation of everyone.
She said learners who benefit are from Qhinqa, Thobigunya High School, Shibase, uMthini Primary School and Sikunye Crèche.
Nzama explained that the idea of Mbali The Village was inspired by Mbali Nzama’s passion for community upliftment, especially in the lives of young people in Izingolweni.
“This passion came from Mbali’s late father who was well-known as Muhle uJesu, an evangelist who worked unselfishly and tirelessly for his community. This prompted Mbali to have a strong desire to give back to the community, however, this was unfortunately not realised during her time due to her untimely passing. Both the place and the organisation is called Mbali The Village because of the concept that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’,” she said.
Nzama said the project is self-funded, adding that she is using her pension payout to fund the organisation.
She said she would appreciate any assistance from the public to continue to provide meals.
She added that anything from grocery vouchers, a wendy house where they can assist learners with homework, a netball kit, and more.
“Our role is to ensure that our learners maintain a healthy body and mind which will ignite conversation at school and heighten their focus. This will guarantee that they produce good results. We challenge businesses and individuals to make a pledge to assist our ‘A’ students with bursaries.
“We have found that this encourages them to persevere and work hard because of the hope that someone will assist them to get to tertiary if they get good grades. If our youth thrives, it will have a domino effect, our communities will thrive and through that, we can make a difference in the world,” she said.
