Uvongo UIP needs 61 more votes

Uvongo is only 61 signatures away from launching its own Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP).

This was confirmed by Uvongo Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) chairperson Hardus Coetzee.
According to URRA, the UIP will focus on safety and security in the area which spans from the St Mike’s bridge through Uvongo and up to portions of Manaba.

Coetzee told Fever that they embarked on the UIP in 2020 but the Covid-19 pandemic affected their plans.
He said the challenge in successfully launching the UIP has been that they need 61 more votes from ratepayers who are non-residents.

Initially, Coetzee had told Fever when they were short of 150 votes and that it was difficult getting hold of these ratepayers.

During the URRA’s AGM at Uvongo Library in November 2023, Ward 19 councillor George Henderson suggested that property owners be contacted via SMS.

Coetzee said although progress has been made since 2023, more votes are still needed.

He said ratepayers will only pay R40 monthly towards the UIP which will be included in their monthly municipal rates, saying that the funds will be collected by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

“Once we get the final votes, I will be given the verified votes and a certificate will be issued. Once we have the certificate, we will send it to the councillor of Ward 19 for final approval. Once approved, deductions will start and that money will only be paid to the UIP three months in arrears,” he said.

He added that the aim is to look after the beaches, the people who go for jogs and runs, and to install extra cameras among other things.

Coetzee said once the UIP is running, the first objective is to make the area safe and clean.

He added that a tender will be put out only for local security companies who can ensure the safety of Uvongo residents.
