Awareness campaign turns political

Fever Local News | Ward 11 in Umzumbe has become a political hotspot, a by-election will be held on April 24.

A government event turned into a political campaign in Ward 11 in Umzumbe recently.

IFP and ANC members wore their political regalia during a disaster awareness campaign and handover of materials to SMMEs in the Mahwaqa area.

Umzumbe mayor Bongani Nyuswa said the community was told not to wear political uniforms.

The municipality made headlines recently after councillors were suspended, expelled and resigned.

Ward 11 has also become a political hotspot, and a by-election will be held on April 24.

Nyuswa said that the aim of the event was to inform the community of the various types of disasters and prevention measures.

“When seasons change, sometimes there are fires, around certain times there are also heavy rains where people lose their houses, so we are here to make them aware of what to do when such disasters happen.”

He also said there have been instances where lightning has struck homes.
Items were handed to two small businesses which had requested assistance.
