Reflecting on 30 years of democracy
Fever Local News | April 27 will mark the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections.
The KZN Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, recently criticised Umzumbe residents for wearing political regalia during government events.
Dube-Ncube was speaking to supporters of the ANC and IFP during a Freedom Month celebration event held in Ward 11 in Umzumbe Municipality last Friday.
This year, Freedom Month will be observed under the theme: “Consolidating and Safeguarding Democratic Gains”.
April 27 will mark the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections.
The day, now known as Freedom Day, is commemorated annually to honour unsung heroes and heroines who fought for freedom and paved the way for a democratic nation.
Dube-Ncube said now that it has been 30 years of democracy, they must reflect on the things they have learnt and done after democracy.
“We must also reflect on the things that we still need to learn. We must also keep in mind the heroes who played a huge role in us getting freedom. We are here today because of several people who walked before us and lost their lives fighting for our freedom. Some of those heroes did not get a chance to be leaders and to be sworn into parliament. They fought so that people like us could lead,” said Dube-Ncube.
She added: “We must not take that for granted because if we do, that will mean the blood of the people who died fighting for our freedom will be in vain. It was painful for me to hear last week that there was a political leader who was killed in the province. Someone else said this means that political killings have returned in KZN. “
“It was hurtful to hear because that means KZN is known for being the province for political killings. This is not right, and it is our job as the people of KZN to make sure that this does not happen. We can do that by respecting each other and working together even when our views differ.”
Also, Dube-Ncube urged the community to work with police to fight crime, saying that the public must not buy stolen items from criminals because such actions condone theft and criminality.
