Police recover firearms in Umkholombe

Both firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of any crimes.

The station commander at Port Shepstone Saps, Brigadier Nonhlanhla Dhlamuka, urges the public to report illegal firearms.

Dhlamuka spoke out after police recovered a 9mm pistol under a pillow in Umkholombe Informal Settlement.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said members of Port Shepstone Detective Service were recently tracing suspects at Umkholombe and approached an identified residence.

“On searching the home, a 9mm pistol was found under a pillow, and a second gun, which belonged to a deceased person, was hidden. Both firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of any crimes. A 35-year-old suspect will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Netshiunda.
