Award-winning radio jockey dreams big
Originally from Boboyi, he said his goals include joining some of the reputable radio stations in the country, training young aspiring radio presenters and owning a big studio.
Former Radio Sunny South presenter Mbongeni Mthwane is now an award-winning radio personality.
Mthwane won the Best Radio Presenter award at the Imisebe Yelanga Awards held at the Harding Town Hall last weekend.
After being in radio for over 10 years, he said this was the first time he was awarded for the work he does.
“I am so happy; it’s the first award I have received since starting in the broadcasting industry at Ugu Youth Radio in 2012,” he said.
Speaking about his journey, Mthwane said in 2015, he travelled to Johannesburg to seek better opportunities, saying that things ended up not going as he had planned.
“I then decided to come back home. While reading one of the local newspapers, I saw an advert about a learnership opportunity in radio and television production at the Esayidi TVET College. I applied, and the rest is history,” he said.
He added that he joined Radio Sunny South in 2017 after completing the radio production course.
He said when he joined that radio station, he was assigned only to weekend shows.
“I was then promoted to do a graveyard show from Monday to Friday from 22:00 to 02:00. In April 2018, I was fortunate to be trusted with doing the biggest show, The Breakfast with uMbongeni. I drove that show until 2023,” he said.
Originally from Boboyi, Mthwane said his goals include joining some of the reputable radio stations in the country, training young aspiring radio presenters and owning a big studio.
