Football girls triumph at back to school games
The Department of Sports' regional manager, Zamani Gumede, thanked the players and sponsors for making the games successful.

The Makhanda High ladies’ team took the title of the U15 Girls Back to School Football Games held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last week.
It was held in collaboration with the Sunflower Women’s Football Club and KZN Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture’s Ugu Club Development.
Makhanda High took the title after beating Ben Ladies FC by 2-0.
The event formed part of the department’s programme, Building Academics through Sports, aimed at growing players.
The games also formed part of the department’s back-to-school initiative; hence, both teams, Makahanda High and Ben Ladies, walked away with new school shoes and pencil cases.
To inspire the young girls, players from the Mamelodi Sundowns Women’s Football Club and Banyana Banyana, Kholosa Biyana and Asanda Hadebe attended.
Also, Banyana Banyana legend Veronica Phewa gave some football life lessons.
The Department of Sports’ regional manager, Zamani Gumede, thanked the players and sponsors for making the games successful.
He said if it were not for the sponsors, the department would have organised the games, and the players would have only walked away with medals and a trophy.
Meanwhile, the head coach of Makhanda High, Musa Mendu, said they had been preparing for a long time, saying that these were not the only games they had to prepare for.
“We do not train or wait for such games; when we prepare, we plan for the future. We encourage them to play in tournaments that will grow their talents; these include putting them in leagues. Playing in a league challenges and grows the players,” he said.
