No clarity yet on refuse removal credit
It was unclear whether residents living in Gamalakhe, Port Edward, and Southbroom would be credited.
Gamalakhe has not been excluded from the motion passed by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) to credit residents for services not rendered during the recent labour unrest.
The motion was recently moved by the DA in RNM.
The council had agreed to a one-month credit on residents’ municipal bill for refuse removal only from Ramsgate to Hibberdene.
The municipality said the lack of service in some areas resulted in the hiring of independent contractors to minimise the effects on residents and the environment.
It was unclear whether residents living in Gamalakhe, Port Edward, and Southbroom would be credited.
Ward 28 councillor Bekithemba Zulu said Gamalakhe residents were included in the motion.
“However, not every resident will be credited. Those who pay for refuse removal will be credited,” he said.
Ward 1 councillor Stephanie Breedt told Fever that refuse was collected during the strike in Southbroom and Port Edward.
Breedt said these areas are served by the South Depot, which was operating during the strike.
Comment from RNM on when and how these residents will be credited was not received at the time of going to press.
