Pension fund plans for Amakhosi

Through the legacy plan, Amakhosi will gain access to medical aid, a pension fund, and investments.

Local traditional leaders have welcomed the launch of the Amakhosi Legacy Plan by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

The legacy plan was launched by the provincial Cogta MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, in Ulundi last week.

MEC Buthelezi said the initiative prioritised the aspirations of Amakhosi as public office bearers by providing them with tangible services that are extended to other office bearers, such as members of parliament and councillors.

Through the legacy plan, Amakhosi will gain access to medical aid, a pension fund, and investments.

Buthelezi said the provisions are designed to offer them and their families essential security, dignity, and peace of mind even post-retirement.

Buthelezi said the plan will first be rolled out to Amakhosi before being available to traditional council secretaries and izinduna.

“This initiative aims to provide Amakhosi with peace of mind, ensuring they can build a lasting legacy for their families and retire securely. We are confident that this programme, by providing a pension, will enable Amakhosi to enjoy their post-retirement years with financial stability,” he said.

The chairperson for the KZN Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Inkosi Sifiso Shinga, expressed gratitude on behalf of Amakhosi.

Meanwhile, Inkosi Shinga described the programme as a significant breakthrough for traditional leaders and their families.

He said since Buthelezi’s appointment as Cogta MEC, Amakhosi have experienced tangible change, with several practical programmes aimed at uplifting and empowering them being implemented across the province.

During the launch, MEC Buthelezi introduced the team from a banking institution, through whom these packages will be facilitated.

Buthelezi thanked the financial institution for developing a relevant and feasible product for Amakhosi.

Furthermore, as part of the launch, the MEC handed over laptops, printers, and data cards to Amakhosi participating in the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) programme, which aims to capacitate Amakhosi in leadership, governance and administration.

Inkosi Sithembiso Lushaba of the Lushaba Tribal Authority in Oshabeni was one of the recipients.
