Winter games to tackle drug epidemic
The games will be played at the TB Molefe Stadium, Margate Sports School and at the Gamalakhe Swimming Pool today.
The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the Ugu District embarked on a clean up campaign at the Gamalakhe Swimming Pool ahead of the Gamalakhe Winter Games.
The games will include swimming, football, volleyball, boxing, netball, rugby, athletics, basketball, karate and indigenous games.
These will be played at the TB Molefe Stadium, Margate Sports School and at the Gamalakhe Swimming Pool today (18th).
Mpume Mbono of the Makhulukhulu Protection Gamalakhe Sports Academy said sports plays a vital role in combating the drug epidemic in the township.
“Despite our efforts, we have unfortunately failed to eliminate drug lords from our community. We must intervene by engaging the youth in sports to keep them busy and away from the dangers of drugs. Sports provide a positive outlet for young people to channel their energy and emotions. By participating in sports, individuals develop valuable skills such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance. These skills not only benefit them on the field but also in their everyday lives, helping them make better decisions and resist the temptation of drugs,” he said.
Mbono said sports create a sense of community and belonging, fostering strong relationships and support networks.
He added that their sense of unity can help individuals resist peer pressure and influences that often lead to drug use.
He said their ultimate goal was to create a drug-free community in Gamalakhe.
“By investing in sports programmes and opportunities for our youth, we are taking a proactive approach towards achieving this goal. Through sports, we can empower our youth, build resilience, and cultivate a safe and healthy environment for generations to come,” he said.
