Swimmers clock personal bests

The pair flew the South Coast flag.

SAMANTHA Labuschagne and Denita-Sue Pieterse took part in the South African Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg recently.

Samantha made the final in the 50m freestyle and semi-finals for 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke and 200m backstroke.

To make the final one needs to qualify in the top eight. To qualify for the semi-finals, one needs to be in the top 16.

Samantha placed eighth in the 50m freestyle and 10th in the 50m backstroke. She was 16th in the 100m backstroke and had to withdraw from the 200m backstroke because of a shoulder injury.

She swam personal bests in all her events, improving by a total of 5.01 seconds over the five events she raced.

Denita-Sue swam in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events and improved in all her swims, in particular the 200m breaststroke where she cut 3.62 seconds off her personal best.

Eleven Blue Ocean Aquatics swimmers recently braved the cold water of the Margate Olympic pool to swim 100m in 17 degree water to achieve their polar bear badge.

These swimmers were Erin Heydricks, Carla Kretzschmar, Louise Kretzschmar, Rudi Steyn, Jaycee Steyn, Tamara Venter, Kayla Heydricks, Ava-Mae Lilje, Michelle Kretzschmar, Janine Oosthuizen, Marzelle de Beer and Mandy Koegelenberg.

Congratulations to all those who swam and thanks to the parents who supported the swimmers.

The swimmers were rewarded with hot chocolate and giant muffins at Mugg & Bean afterwards.
