Terry and Tony too good

THE betterball medal at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday was won by Terry Dore and Tony Westoby on nett 56. Three off the pace were Dave Page and Stan Date, as well as Geoff Skelton and Dave Neilson.
Stuart Janvier had two two-clubs.
The women played the first round of the Joyce Beath foursomes knockout last Saturday, so there were no regular results.
The Wednesday competition saw Trevor Lauf, Norman Farrell, Les Civin and ‘ghost’ win on 94 points, on a countout from Derrick Matthew, Bruce Matthew, Vic Pretorius and Derek James, as well as Henrdy Kotze, Gary Purtell, Dave Neilson and ‘ghost’.
Wednesday’s competition was won by Judy Hofman, Eileen Neilson, Mari Fielden and Rene Matthew on 91 points, followed by Ruth Mosburger, Janet Humphrey, Mary Carolan and Janet Barclay on 89 points.
Nearest the pins were Ruth Mosburger (4th), Judy Hofman (11th), Judy Hofman (14th).
Connor James won a junior competition played in strong wind last Sunday. He carded 35 points. Naude Barkhuizen was second on 31 points and Graeme Sole was third on 30 points.
Club manager Gavin Sole is hoping to make this a monthly competition. It will be open to all junior golfers.
Meanwhile, Gavin is gearing up for the Champion of Champions at Kloof Country Club this weekend. It’s one of the few tournaments in the province that has eluded him. Expect that to change.

Five club fun at Margate

THE women played a five club mulligan at Margate Country Club last Tuesday, with Jean Page winning on 47 points. Beryl Williamson was second on 43 points and Rene Paton third on 42 points.
The Wednesday Wobblers’ alliance was won by Alan Davies, Peter Rogers and Alan Robinson on 89 points. In a tie for second on 89 points were Dolf Willemse, Frank Merrill and Ray Hubbard, as well as A Schultz, Konnie Konrad and Eddie Scheepers. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Jan Richter, Keith Duncalf and Thomas Scrivers on 67 points.
Kenny Wienand was again in great form, winning the pro shop competition on 44 points. He edged out the ubiquitous Gavin Sole of Southbroom, who carded a gross 63 (which included two bogeys) and took great delight in pipping Andrew Curlewis by one, although it must be said that Curly fairly sauntered around the course.
Louie Carrera was third on 41 points. Ivan Curlewis was nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages. Ivan will be heading to Kloof to play the Champion of Champions after an absence of a few years. He has the record of having played in the event the most, due to having won the Margate champs on 34 occasions. Doug Sima will be going along as the matchplay champ.
The business day last Friday, sponsored by Giorgio Panelbeaters and Margate Pro Shop, was won by Flip Fourie, Deon Meyer, Anton Kohrmann and Johan Wentzel on 102 points. Incredibly, they all birdied the 7th hole.
In second place on 97 points were Frikkie van Zyl, Fanie Terblanche, Marius Visser and Johan Erasmus, with Eddie and Anita Scheepers, Joe and Rina Rito next on 96 points.
In fourth place on 93 points were Theuns Esterhuizen, Christo Esterhuizen, Piet Lombard and Johan Neethling, followed on 92 points by Cyril and Corinne Greensmith, John Barker and Joan Minnaar.
Nearest the pins, sponsored by Blue Lagoon Restaurant, were won by Marius Visser (2nd) and Christo Esterhuizen (16th).
Saturday’s competition was won by Theuns Esterhuizen on 43 points, with Christo Esterhuizen and Marius Visser next on 40 points.
The women’s competition was won by Maureen Ogilvie, Corinne Greensmith, Shannon Gottlieb and Lesley Erasmus on 90 points, from Hilary Hendry, Lexley Lewis, Jean Page and Janet Dowling on 85 points.

Pro shows how it’s done

RAIN washed out play at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday.
However, it was clear on Saturday and the pro Jesse Verster returned 40 points to show that he hasn’t lost his touch.
The A division was won by Keegan Reddy on nett 67, followed by Sanjay Singh on nett 69.
The B division saw Mike Pillay clean up on nett 69, with Rob Piers on nett 73.
Howard Crouch won the C division on a countout from Dave Milne on nett 70.
Keegan had the best gross, a 75, and was also the mug winner.
The business day takes place this Friday.
Altaaf Bux will represent the club as the strokeplay and matchplay champion at the Champion of Champions at Kloof this weekend.
