Locals show talent in karate champs
Members of the Ugu karate structure recently met to reflect on a successful second year regional karate championships.
THE second annual Ugu Regional Karate Championships took place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe last Saturday.
Held under the auspices of Karate KwaZulu-Natal and Karate South Africa, this tournament was open to World Karate Federation-affiliated clubs only.
Seven South Coast karate clubs from Scottburgh, Port Shepstone, Uvongo and Margate took part. About 122 individual entries spread over age groups from five years to 50 years.
More than 100 individual medals and four sets of team medals were awarded during the course of the day.
Ugu Karate Chairman, Sensei Coenie Vrey and his committee would like to express their thanks to the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, who sponsored the cost of hiring the venue and provided the medals and to South Coast Tourism for the interest shown in promoting karate on the South Coast.
