CALM, clean sea does not always lend itself to good fishing. The water has been this way for two weeks now with the result that fishing is ‘patchy’, with mainly shad on the bite although some really nice sized fish over the 400mm mark have been taken.
As the current shad season closes at the end of the month, shad fishermen have as little as two weeks left. The best advice is to stop targeting shad as the ‘flora and fauna’ boys will be very active, having yet another reason to prosecute during October and November while the shad season is closed.
Scientifically speaking, this is the time the shad spawn and there is a need to conserve such a great sporting species.
October is known for its ‘bronzie’ fishing yet these fish are caught all year round. This is probably because fishermen can’t fish for shad, so they turn their attention to bronze bream and naturally, more of these delicious eating fish are caught when shad season is closed.
However, with such calm seas, there is little ‘white’ water, (a sanctuary for these reef dwellers), and a more turbulent sea would improve the chances of finding them.
A number of grey sharks are also on the bite and the evenings would be a good time to target them.
