Juniors display true team spirit
The club placed 10th overall at the championships.
MARGATE Swimming Club’s junior squad members competed at the KZN Junior Winter Championships in Durban recently. It proved to be a lot of fun for everyone, including the coaches, with the young athletes showing the true meaning of team spirit.
Arno Smith put in an outstanding performance, progressing through to eight finals and adding five silver and a bronze medal to his tally in his 50m and 100m butterfly, 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
Sune de Wit achieved personal best times in the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke events, progressing through to finals in all three. Clarisa le Hanie progressed through to the finals in her 50m buttefly, 50m and 100m backstroke events. First time qualifier Lune Arlow recorded impressive time improvements in all of her events, improving her overall times by a whopping 31.56 seconds.
Other notable improvements and personal best times were achieved by Liam Botha, who placed in the top 20 in four of his events, 50 and 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke. April Niemack achieved personal best times in her four events, the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 50m and 100m backstroke. Jeandre Joubert finished in the top 20 in all of his events, improving his times in the 100m backstroke, 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
Joshua Parry recorded improved times in both the 50m and 100m freestyle and placed in the top 20 in five events. All swimmers took part in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley relay events, with teams placing sixth and seventh respectively.
