MARGATE BC
THE eighth Doug Watson memorial classic bowls tournament (12th classic) took place at Margate Bowling Club last weekend. The event attracted 128 bowlers comprising teams of two men and two women and played in the various formats laid down by the late Doug Watson 12 years ago.
Thanks to the generosity of Warwick Wealth, Bob Elliott, Danny and Carol McMullen,. Ken Tonge and Ellen’s Bowls Shop.there was R7 600 prize money at stake.
The event was won by Bob Elliott, Bill Collin, Liesje de Rosner and Jeannie Cousins. Danie Human, Keith Mills, Annetjie Human and Jackie Marais were runners-up. Dannie van der Post, Reg Saunders, Liz van der Post and Dawn Ingle were third followed by Barry Delvin, Rassie Erasmus, Kobie Stander and Winnie Hess in fourth.
Olwen Gibbs and Chris Abram won the Mooirivier Brokers’ mixed 2-4-2 played on Friday with 4+21. Franci Philpott and Eric Chamier were runners-up on 4+14. Tony and Eileen Abel won the first session on 2+13 and Ian Hutton and Trixie Smith won the second session on 2+11.
The next sponsored competition is the Manaba Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 on Friday, October 11. Contact Ellen Cawker at 082 8019339.
Members interested in playing in the KBA men’s and women’s sevens league are requested to put their names on the lists on the notice board.

MUNSTER
BROADWAY-themed 25 Club draw hosted by Herman and Maureen Botha was held last Friday,
Winners of the September draw are as follows: 1st Louise Dry; 2nd Irene Filmer; 3rd Graeme Filmer and 4th Maureen Botha.
The bonus draw was won by Jenny Atherstone followed by David Lindley, Leone Bloem and Joey Anderson.
There will be a bingo evening at the club this Friday, October 4 at 5.30 for 6pm. Supper will be served.
Members are reminded that the prize-giving dinner will be held on Friday, October 18 at 6pm. Prize winners are requested to be in full bowls uniform.
SOUTHBROOM
THE green is coming on slowly but a good downpour would work wonders. Thanks to everyone who is helping with the painting and refurbishment of the clubhouse interior. Although the work has not quite finished everything is already looking brighter and fresher.
The popular monthly quiz/fish and chips evening will take place on Friday, October 11 at 6 for 6.30pm. Come and join in the fun and games.
Members are requested to please start organising all knockout games so that as soon as the green is open, matches can start getting under way.
It is good to hear John Bailey’s new hip is working well and he will be ‘up and running’ when the green reopens.
MARGATE CC
ESTA Wenzel, Yvonne van Mentz and Ross Ferguson won the Shelly Beach SuperSpar mixed trips on 4+27. Runners-up on 4+9 were Dora Vosloo, Helen Proctor and Martiens Olivier. The session prize went to Annette Payne, Danny McCarthy and Trevor Hayward. Trevor also won the 50/50 draw.
Will all members make a special effort to come to the club competitions awards day on Saturday, October 12. Those collecting awards and prizes must be dressed in uniform.
Thanks to Martiens and Jo Olivier and the generosity of Sebenza Nursery, the gardens around the greens should look brilliant this year. Thanks also to Helen Proctor for taking on the task of this initiative.
Members are asked to take note that because of the sevens league, the scheduled men’s trips will not be played on November 5.
The Margate Country Club AGM has been postponed to October 30 at 6pm. Please change your diaries. All club members are encouraged to attend this important meeting.
UMTENTWENI
MARIE Coetzer and Mada Lindeque won the Abingdon Road Spar women’s 2-4-2 played on Thursday, September 26 with a score of 4+29 from runners-up Denise Nel and Irene Harris on 4+15. Inger Mitchell and Isobel Kilian won the session prize on 2+6.
Congratulations to Peter Brewer and Bill Hobbs on winning the club’s men’s pairs championship with Dalton Cornwall and Dumisani Madlala in second place. In the women’s event, Doreen Ferguson and Hazel Lough became the champions with Julie Cornwall and Linda Hobbs in second place. Well done to all of you.
The next competition will be the Harbour View SuperSpar (in house) mixed 2-4-2 on Friday, October 4 followed by the Sezela/Umtentweni fellowship mixed trips on Sunday, October 13 at Umtentweni.
RIVERSIDE
BILL Brown and Dawn Oehley won the Fruit and Veg City 2-4-2 with 4+19. Runners-up were Brenda Smith and Dick Thompson with 4+15 and session winners were Vi Eltis and Sharon Smith with 2+11. The next sponsored competitions will be Hopden’s KwikSpar open trips on Wednesday, October 9 and Airprof Engineering men’s trips on Wednesday, October 16.
The club will be hosting a beetle drive at the social evening this Friday, October 4 at 6pm. Chicken and chips will be available. Please put your names on the list for catering purposes. The accumulator prize is building up and will be drawn but you have to be present to win it.
The club will be celebrating Halloween with a dinner dance at R60 per person on Friday, November 1. The theme will be black and orange, so you have plenty of time to prepare your outfits. Should be good fun!

VILLAGE
BASIL Redshaw and Kathy Hall won the Execudec mixed 2-4-2 followed by Henry and Hilary Fick. Sessions went to Roy Baker and Vicki de Beer and to Ivan and Hazel Hosken. John Sutton won the 50/50.
The next competitions to be held at the club are Hopden’s Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 on Monday, October 7 followed by Hibiscus Retirement Villages’ men’s trips on Tuesday 8th and Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips on Thursday 10th. There is a list on the board for members to enter their names for the sevens league taking place from November 4 to November 8.

There will be a bring and braai this Friday, October 4 when the RAC draw will take place. All welcome. The next Fruit and Veg City tabs in drawn mixed trips will be this Saturday, October 5. Dave will be doing another breakfast on Sunday 13th, so please put your names on the list for catering purposes. Breakfast will be followed by tabs in fun bowls in mufti for those who wish to play.
THE BELL
WITH two full greens, the first Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips was a great success. The event was won by Louw Vermeulen, Charmaine van Deventer and Michele Vermeulen. Second were Spike Maritz, Ted Parnell and Dot Maritz followed by Barbara Fernihough, Stan Penny and Jimmy Holtzhauzen.
The KBA Masters will be played at The Bell on Saturday and Sunday October 5 and 6. There will be no social bowls that weekend but please support all the players, especially Louw Vermeulen and Johannie Theron who are representing The Bell. Everyone is wished all the best.
The greens will be available to KBA players for practice sessions this Friday.
On the board are invitations for the men’s and women’s KBA sevens league, the club’s men’s and women’s drawn fours as well as the mixed drawn fours competitions.
The Captain’s Anchor mixed fours has been cancelled.

BANNERS REST
WINNERS of the SuperSpar Port Edward mixed trips played on Thursday, September 26 were Maureen La Grange, Glen Allen and Andreas van der Linde. Runners-up were Dave Banks, William McKenzie and Pam Gilson. Second session went to Danie van der Post, Vi Pells and Amorie Schoëler and the 50/50 board was won by Margaret Labuschagne.
A very busy calendar lies ahead of us, starting this Friday, October 4 with the 19th Hole mixed pairs with thanks to catering by Andreas van der Linde. A fund-raiser to benefit the Help Foundation takes place at 2pm on Saturday, October 5, followed on Sunday, October 6 by the Tops Port Edward men’s pairs, with thanks to catering by Sheila Hankey and Nova Allen. The Warwick drawn mixed fours takes place on Thursday, October 10 with thanks to catering by Ally Weir.
