Soul searching for skipper

IT was a bittersweet time for Southbroom’s Gavin Sole at the recent South African Interprovincial golf tournament played at Rustenburg. He captained the KwaZulu-Natal team which unfortunately got relegated by the narrowest of margins. However, he personally had one of his best interprovs ever, winning or halving most of his games and eventually finishing fourth on the MVP list.

This is quite an achievement considering he is 43 and many of his opponents were 20 years younger. Gavin has hinted (again) that this was his last interprov, but in all honesty, he seems to be getting better as he gets older. Perhaps he should start focusing on the Senior Tour, which isn’t that far off.

The competition last Saturday was won by Janet Humphrey and Lynn Blackstock on 46 points, on a countout from Mari Fielden and Shirley Sproule as well as Lee Mutch and Della Kempthorne.

The men’s competition was won on a superb 50 points by Kerry Fielden and Dave Chambers, who allegedly borrowed Phil le Roux’s swing for the day. This must have been the case because it appeared (at times) that Phil was swishing around with Dave’s swing!

In second place on 49 points were Norman Jeffrey and Jim Cook, on a countout from Coert Britz and Malcolm Moorley.

The previous Wednesday’s comp saw Stuart Janvier, John Lison, Carl Mosburger and Gerald Myers clean up on 100 points, although there was no ace from Gerald this time.

In second place were Gordon Moody, Jonathan Shaw, Mike Jacquet and Chris Miller on 96 points, followed by Dudley Simmonds, Geoff Skelton, Bruce Matthew and Derrik Matthew on 90 points.

It was also Chris Cook’s 80th birthday and his team duly obliged with exactly 80 points.

The women’s alliance was won by Jeanette Peyios, Rene Matthew, Judy Hofma and Mary Carolan on 92 points, one ahead of Jenny Westray, Sandi Burger and Karin Asbock. On 87 points were Ruth Mosburger, Janet Barclay, Kate Clarence and Michelle van der Hoek.

Lexley wins captain’s prize

LEXLEY Lewis took line honours with a creditable 41 individual Stableford points to win the women’s captain and vice captain’s prize at Margate Country Club last Tuesday. Margaret Ford was second on 38 followed by Beryl Williamson on 36 points. The Wobblers’ alliance with two scores to count was won by Tony Peace, Dave Morrison and Piet Pretorius on 90 points, one point ahead of Brian Jeffreys, Peter Davies, John Botha. Peter Rogers, Andy Buchan and Neil van Vuuren were third on 85 points.

The Arthur Tomlinson Floater was claimed by Fred Boshoff, Frank Merrill and John Barker on 70 points after a countout.

Thursday’s individual Stableford competition sponsored by the pro shop was won by Piet Ludick on 45 points after a countout from Rob Weyer. Dirk Coetzee was third on 40 points after a countout from John Webster,

Nearest the pin, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was won by Keith Duncalf.

Saturday’s men’s individual bonus bogey competition was won by Graeme Massom on +5 after a countout from Okkie Wannenburg, Brian Jolliffe was third on +4 followed by Dawie de Villiers on +3.

The jackpot was won by Brian Jolliffe on +4.

The women’s betterball Stableford. was won by Wondra Bothma and Corinne Greensmith on 45 points. Irene Tomlinson and Janet Dowling were second on 43 points followed by Rene Paton and Beryl Williamson on 42 points.

Prince and Aldayne fire up

PRINCE Mpisane and Aldayne Madraveeran cruised through to the semi-finals of Pro-Vision’s matchplay champs.

“We will be champion at the end,” a fired up Aldayne said after the game.

Kass Pillay and Dhevan Moodley will play Santhos Baskali and Collin Moodley to see who plays Mpisane and Madraveeran.

Sweady Chetty and Wanda Nxumalo will play Justin Naidoo and Resheen Goberdan and the winners will advance o the final.

Meanwhile, the social event played at Port Shepstone Country Club was won by Dhevan Moodley on 37 points.
