Cricketer Chad makes his mark

Chad was nominated as the most valuable player in the team.

SIX boys from the Southern KwaZulu-Natal cricket team were selected to join a development team from Durban, namely Chad Laycock, Anthony Dunford, Ross Klusener, Chase Britz, Benjamin Jeffreys and Thomas Constable. The boys attended practice at Kings Park in Durban every Wednesday in preparation for the Kearsney cricket festival from September 20 to 22.

Unfortunately some of the games got rained out on the Saturday, but shortened games (i.e. 15 overs = 20 overs) were played on the Sunday. Chad, a pupil at Izotsha, was nominated as the most valuable player in the team and received an accolade for contributing the most to the team. He reached three milestones of over 50 runs in three matches, the third 50 in the last match played off 4.4 overs and then retired after six overs.

The biggest surprise was when Chad received the prize for the best batter and most runs scored in the tournament. This was out of 18 teams with 12 players in each team (216 U11 boys). Chad also received the same prize at the Indoor Cricket Nationals in Port Elizabeth earlier this year, but that was for most runs scored out of all age groups up to the U18s. All the boys played very well and were undefeated in all of their games.
