From the fairways: Southbroom celebrates 75 years
The club has a long and proud history.
DENIS Hutchinson was the guest of honour at Southbroom Golf Club’s recent 75th anniversary. Some time ago Hugh Purtell came across a programme from the 50th (dated 1938 to 1988) and brought this to Derek and Sheena James’s attention. Derek suggested they make an evening of it and invited ‘Hutchie’ to come and talk, which he did, free of charge.
He did enjoy his stay at Coral Tree Colony – thanks to Dave and Liz Page for putting him up. Derek collected ‘Hutchie’ from King Shaka International Airport last Saturday morning and they teed off in the competition alongside Hugh and Roel Germs, with the three octogenarians playing off the senior tees. Unfortunately the stormy weather and lightning meant that they had to stop after nine holes, but they enjoyed their game nonetheless.
The evening was a great success with wonderful support from the members, with more than 130 attending and enjoying the three-course meal. ‘Hutchie’ commanded a rapt audience with his amusing jokes and anecdotes about his varied life, both as a PGA professional and his current career as sports commentator for SuperSport and Sky and the golf world feed.
After that the party started with Billy the Skit entertaining. The placemats incorporated the past and the present with various events highlighted.
Southbroom was originally a nine hole golf course, laid out by J Naven, constructed by Frank Eyles and officially opened in 1938 by PG Stiebel, president of the Natal Golf Union. The supplement to the South Coast Herald, November 5, 1954 gives a detailed history. It’s up in the club lounge.
Many good people have contributed immensely to Southbroom over the years and it was wonderful to honour committee stalwarts Hugh Purtell, Roel Germs and Willie Rush. Hugh and Willie appeared on both the yesteryear and current place mats!
As far as the golf was concerned, Jim Cook and Mike Jacquet carded 45 points to win, with Dave Page and Tilly Nel next on 44 points. Most of the field walked off due to the rain. In the women’s section first place was snapped up by Ruth Mosburger and Trudy Rush on 45 points. In second place were Jeanne Powell and Di Morris on 39 points, with Mari Fielden and Ann Simmonds in third place on 36 points. The previous Wednesday’s competition saw Ruth Mosburger win on nett 70, by two from Maeve Mullane. Irene Schanda won the bronze division on nett 68, with Lorraine Cook next on nett 70.
The men’s comp was won by Trevor Lauf on nett 68, followed by Don Osbourn and George Haswell on nett 69. Roel Germs won the nett on 43 points, counting out John Scott. In third place on 39 points was Olliver Ransome. The club has renamed the Bilton Trophy in honour of Roel and all he has done for the club over many years.

Santhos and Colin clinch victory

THE Izotsha Primary golf day took place at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday, fortunately just before the rain lashed the coast. It had been postponed from the week before.
The winners were Collin Moodley and Santhos Baskali on 48 points, followed by Daniel Bunge and H Engelbrecht on 47 points. Gerald Koch and Koos Fouche had 46 points and counted out Jenny Hulley and Cecelia Verster.
The previous Wednesday’s competition was won by Peter Thompson and Alan Jackson on nett 58, three ahead of Dave Mee and Ronnie Naidoo. Hopefully the rain will stop and the course dry out ahead of the Beekman Classic this Friday and Saturday.
