Junior cricketers well rewarded
The youngsters were recognised for their efforts during the year.
PORT Shepstone Country Club’s Junior Cricket Club held its first cricket awards and year-end function at the club last Saturday. The theme for the night was ‘Night of the Stars’ which was enjoyed by the players, coaches and parents. The junior cricket club started in March this year and the club now has 45 dedicated and enthusiastic boys who love the sport.
Guest speaker Shaun Warner, from Simply Cricket, a level three coach from Hillcrest, assured the young cricketers that they are all Proteas in the making and that cricket is built from passion. Chairman of the club, Nicole Klusener, said she was overwhelmed by how quickly the club had grown. “Looking back to March, when the idea of starting a junior cricket club came about, many of us didn’t imagine hosting an awards evening,” she said.
The club has teams in the U10, U11 and U13 age groups. “We believe as a club we have achieved one of the main goals, or reasons why we started the club in the first place, which was to get boys playing more cricket,” said Mrs Klusener. The team has made good contacts and relationships with other clubs, which include Chatsworth, Phoenix and Rovers. The club hopes to grow this, which will afford them more matches and opportunities for all the boys next season. The club thanked parents and coaches for their support and patience in growing the club.
Awards in the U10 category were as follows: Kelli Ashington (best bowler), Bruce Bormann (best batsman), Reece Murray (most improved).
The U11 category winners were Chad Laycock (best batsman), Chase Britz (best bowler), Ross Klusener (best all-rounder and cricketer of the year) and Antony Dunford (most improved).
The U13 winners were Brinley de Bruin (best bowler), Mihle Mgoqi (most improved), Tom Constable (best wicketkeeper) and Sanolin Pather (best batsman).
Many other cricketers did not go home empty-handed as they received merit awards for their efforts.
