Man United golfers win – again
The rivalry spilled out onto the fairways last Sunday.
THERE was a tense battle between local supporters of Manchester United and Liverpool at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday.
Although Liverpool scored more points on the day, 631 to Manchester United’s 619, the score had to be divided by the number of players per team, which meant that the Red Devils clinched victory by 0.02 points.
It was the fourth time in five years that Manchester United had won. However, the rivalry is still fierce and Liverpool players could at least console themselves with the knowledge that the real team in the English Premier League has recorded a win over its arch rivals this season.
There was a significant amount of ‘sledging’ although golfers prefer to call it gamesmanship. It was, of course, all played in a great spirit which made the day just that much more exciting.
Sponsors including the South Coast Herald and Cassims Clothing, were thanked.
The best individual scores were recorded by Emmanuel Mseleku 44 points, Eldayne Madraveeran 42 points, Pravesh Govender and Sharms Goberdan, both 41 points.
Captain’s knock from Brian
BRIAN Brasher won the Captain’s Trophy at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday. The windy and wet conditions didn’t seem to bother him and he returned a nett 71.
David Rush won the monthly medal on nett 71, but wasn’t eligible for the Captain’s Trophy as he did not win a monthly medal during the year, or even come close.
Carding nett 72 were Dave Neilson, Gavin Sole, Coert Britz, Roel Germs and Gordon Moody.
Les Civin won the Stableford on 39 points, with Malcolm Moorley on 37 points and Olliver Ransome and Roger Deacon on 35 points.
The women played nine holes, with Lan Yeadon winning on nett 33,5. Michelle Davies was second on nett 37, followed by Eileen Neilson on nett 37,5. Joy Crutchfield and Geraldine Treherne were next on nett 39.
Three players had 20 players in last Friday’s Chicken Run, which was very well supported, namely Dries Barkhuizen, Lance Marshall and George Haswell. Bob Clark had 18 points. Other fowl went the way of Terry Sheppard, Naude Barkhuizen, Dick Holtshausen, Graham Volck and Gordon Abbey.
The previous Wednesday’s comp was won by Trevor Lauf and Dries Barkhuizen on nett 66. The women’s section was won by Geraldine Treherne and Gill Nitch on nett 64, four clear of Jean Purtell and Jeanne Powell.
Brian and Barry clean up
THE women’s threeball alliance at Margate Country Club last week was won by Corrine Greensmith, Agnes
Spielmann and Rene Paton on 80 points. In second place were Chiappini Boshoff, Lexley Lewis and Joan Minnaar on 77 points.
The Wobblers’ game was rained off.
Thursday’s pro shop competition saw Heber de Beer count out Chris Nel on 40 points to win. Patrick Mavundla was third on 35 points.
Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was won by Rod Bouwer.
Saturday’s competition was won by Brian Jolliffe and Barry Oehme on 44 points, one ahead of Edwin Steyn and Patrick Mavundla, as well as Piet Ludick and Ralph Burls. Brian and Barry also won the jackpot.
The women’s comp was won by Rina Rito and Shannon Gottlieb, with Chiappini Boshoff and Lizzie Meyer in second place and Hannetjie Pretorius and Joan Minnaar third.
Easy win for Johann
THE individual Stableford at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday was won by Johann van Niekerk on 40 points. Gerald Koch was second on 36 points.The Dip Spar day last Saturday was won by Bevis Fairbrother and Rob Piers on a stunning 50 points. In second place were Rob Calder and Christo Janse Van Vuuren on 47 points, with Peppy Govender and Doc Bux third on 46 points.
The monthly mug will be this Saturday, December 7.
