‘Happy Hooker’ strikes again
There's lots to look forward to for visiting fishermen.
CRAIG Treherne, skipper of the infamous Happy Hooker, boated another ignoblis kingfish of 44kg last weekend.
This is Craig’s second kingfish of more than 40kg this year, with another ‘kingy’ of around the 30kg mark boated earlier in the year.
Craig has been catching these fish on vertical jigs and all have been released to fight another day.
Jaques Olivier, fishing on his boat Too Tight, also had a kingfish of 36kg caught on a jig last Sunday.
One has to ensure one’s tackle is in tip-top condition in order to have any chance of landing one of these magnificent hard fighting fish.
Guys, please take a photo and put them back as there is not much one can do with these large fish.
Tuna are still feeding freely with some good-sized fish around the 25kg to 27kg mark being boated.
Don’t forget to come down to the Shelly Beach ski-boat base every afternoon to see the fish being weighed in.
The Tackle Box Summer Ski-boat Festival started on Wednesday with the last day being Saturday.
The prize-giving is being held this Saturday evening with live entertainment, so bring along the family for a very festive evening.
Rock and surf angling is picking up nicely now that the water is starting to clear a bit, with plenty of shad being caught at first light. Most fish are making size.
Some nice-sized kob are still being caught at most estuary mouths with the paddle tail still being the preferred method.

Port Edward
After the rain and floods fishing has improved much, and shad are being caught daily. Getting to the rocks early seems to be the answer.
Bronze bream are also biting and the water is a good colour for bigger fish, with a kingfish and sandshark on the ‘lost at the gaff’ list.
Good news is that some grunter have been caught at the Mpenjati river mouth and this is a sign that the annual grunter season, although late, should be here.
