SOUTHBROOM Golf Club has a new chairman, with Joy Crutchfield taking over from Graham Volck who stepped down. This was at the club’s annual general meeting held last Tuesday which very well attended.
George Haswell has also stepped down as a committee member and his place was filled by Gary Purtell, who will be the vice-captain, a position previously occupied by Paul Cole.
Derrik Matthew continues as club captain. Joy was elected chairman by the committee. She is the first woman to hold this position in the club’s history.
Graham and George were thanked for their sterling efforts over the years. The incoming committee was wished a happy and successful year.
The committee is Willie Rush (president), Joy Crutchfield (chairman), Derrik Matthew (captain), Gary Purtell (vice-captain), Julie Gerber, Dave Page, Paul Cole, Augustine D’Ewes (lady captain) and Derek James (pro).
Rourke Lauryssen is the new Southbroom junior club champion. He shot a gross 78 off his two handicap to beat his brother Matt on a count out. The brothers are also members at Dainfern. Best nett was won by Keagan Burton with a 69, with Naude Barkhuizen runner-up on 75. On nett 77 were Connor James and Greg Blunden, followed by Bryce Bentley on nett 79 and Graham Sole on nett 82.

Derek has recently returned from Portugal where he was part of the South African PGA team that played in the PGA International Teams Championships. They finished 14th overall. “Portugal is a great place to visit and we enjoyed the very friendly people,” said Derek.
The winners of last Wednesday’s competition on 96 points were Graham Barkhuizen, Gus Bonini, Darren Brown and Dean Bonini, on a countout from Mike Reimer, Barry Stott, John Greve and Derek Sumption.
In third, also on 96 points, were Chris Cook, Rob Meydell, R van Rensburg and Olliver Ransome.
The women’s competition was won on 91 points by Joy Crutchfield, Dolores Mason, Bev Reimer and Meryl Chambers. In second place on 86 points were Carol Lamb, Michelle van der Hoek, Karen Bridgeford and Biffy Dunn, on a countout.
Funds raised for worthy cause
THE Genesis Trust golf day fund-raiser was held at Port Shepstone Country Club last Monday.
The course was in good condition considering the rain and local stalwarts Carl Grobler and Ian Stewart produced the best golf, carding 49 points.
They edged out Peppy Govender and Doc Bux who had 48 points.
In third place were C Esterhuizen and J van der Waal on 47 points. They counted out H de Beer and J Neethling.
In fifth place were Gerhard Labuschagne and Charles Mostert on 46 points.
Enter now for Closed
THE Southern KwaZulu-Natal Closed golf champs will be played at Port Shepstone Country Club on Sunday, January 26.
It will be played over 36 holes of strokeplay. Prizes will be given to best gross and best nett. The handicap limit is 14.
After this teams will be chosen for the premier and central leagues, which start in February.
