FOR Uvongo Tennis Club, the year 2013 ended with a tragedy when member, Andy Beytell, had a heart attack and collapsed after playing tennis.
CPR was started immediately by club members. The relevant emergency and ambulance services were contacted and responded speedily.
Despite this, Andy died in hospital a few days later. Sincere condolences go to his wife, Mia, family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Margate Presbyterian Church this Friday, January 10 at 11am.
In regular news, several new members were welcomed, namely Johan Hamman, Carlos Araujo, Gerard Creamer, Sandra McClelland, Muriel de Vries, Jan Kalisky, Jan Kaajan, Maria Vermaak, Maggie Cockroft, Trevor McDonald and Norman Farrer.
It is hoped they will play on a regular basis.
It was, unfortunately, ‘good-bye’ to Ewert Bouwer who, at the age of 83 and because of ill health, can no longer play tennis, and to Debbie Rosenburg who has relocated to Yzerfontein. Both are wished all of the very best.
Chairman Pieter de Kock has relocated to Pretoria to be closer to his family. Howard Osborne has been co-opted to serve on the committee. A round robin has been planned to take place at the club on Saturday, January 25, starting at 1.30pm sharp.
Members wishing to play are requested to place their names on the list provided on the notice board. Social tennis will also take place with a braai being held after play.
Birthdays this month: Horst Kiwus, Howard Osborne (who turned 80), Neil Perry, Ellene Barbadimos, Val Kriel, Anthea Mensing, Shelagh Schwegman and Linda Visser.
A very peaceful, happy and healthy 2014 is wished to all members, families and friends.
