Augustine wins Curlewis Shield
SOUTHBROOM Golf Club’s women’s captain Augustine D’Ewes was the winner of the Curlewis Shield played last Wednesday. She carded nett 75. Jeanne Powell also had nett 75 and won the A division, but lost out on a countout for the overall prize. Karin Asbock had nett 76. The B division was won by Lorna Johnson on nett 72, on a countout from Candida Amm. Although they had lower scores than Augustine, they hadn’t qualified for the Curlewis Shield.
The shield originated when Dorothy Robinson (formerly Curlewis) settled on the coast in 1954. Her son Ivan, arguably one of most talented golfers that the South Coast has ever produced, was only five years old at the time. Ivan’s son Andrew is currently the resident/touring pro playing out of Margate Country Club. Club member Noelle Edwards made the trophy, incorporating the ‘souvenir spoon’ that the women once played for in the medal competitions of yesteryear.
Meanwhile, Dave Neilson won the men’s comp last Wednesday, returning 39 points to edge out Roel Germs, Derek James and Stuart Janvier, who all had 38 points. Richard Derman and Arthur Lee had 37 points. Derek James and Mickey Haynes both had two two-clubs.
The open day last Friday was won by Roger Phillips, Heather Anderson, with Emil and Hanna Heirhold, on 99 points. Five points adrift were Candida Amm, Margaret Sherratt, Jean Cole and Sandy Luus, who counted out Mike Jacquet, Roel Germs, Colin Steyn and George Haswell. Nearest the pin prizes, sponsored by BP Ramsgate, were won by Roy Watkins (4th), Dave Neilson (8th and 14th) and Chris Huber (11th). Nearest for two were George Haswell (5th) and Janet Humphrey (15th).
Last Saturday’s comp was won by George Haynes and Mike Vos on 75 combined points. There was a three-way tie for second on 74 points, shared by Garth Strong and Rob Meydell (who had two two-clubs), Don Osbourn and Brian Murray, as well as Stuart Janvier and John Lison.
The women’s comp saw Karin Asbock and Rene Matthew take first prize on 75 points, by three from Lorna Johnson and Sandy Luus on 72 points. In third place on 66 points were Margi Bonini and Michelle Davies. >

Mike finds hot form

THE Wobblers’ alliance at Margate Country Club last Wednesday was won on 85 points by Fran Berend, Derek Egerton and Tony Comte. They pipped Eddie Scheepers, Brian Jeffries and Dave Parsons, who had 84 points.
In third spot were Andrew Dickerson, Jim Finn and Derek Young on 81 points. The Arthur Tomlinson floater went to Ken Oakley, Doug Johnston and Billy Brown on 67 points.
Thursday’s comp, sponsored by the pro shop, saw Mike Lee in scintillating form, carding 42 points to win by two from Patrick Mavundla. Barry Oehme was third on 39 points, with Lexley Lewis in fourth place on 38 points.
Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Edwin Steyn.
Last Saturday’s comp saw Noel and Heather Parsonage the victors on 47 points, by one point from Mike Lee and Graeme Massam, as well as Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp.
Mike and Graeme won the jackpot. In the women’s section, the best pair were Anita Scheepers and Joan Minnaar on 47 points, by two from Jane Davies and Lesley Erasmus.
In third place on 44 points were Christa-Mari Oppermann and Sandi Johnston.

Daan is no mug

THE Auto Exec monthly mug was played at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday.
The individual Stableford section was won by Yzelle Greyling on 36 points, on a countout from Beryl Olden.
Keegan Reddy produced some excellent golf to card nett 67 and win by three from Gavin van Wyk. Keegan also had the best gross, a 75.
The B division was won by Trevor Green on nett 68, by two from Gerald Koch.
In the C division, Dave Milne cleaned up on nett 70, with Peter Stoppel next on nett 75.
However, the overall winner was Daan Swanepoel on nett 66.
Gerald Koch and Jacky van Heerden won at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday on 48 points. They were four ahead of Leif Holmstedt and Charles Mostert.

Nomads get year under way

THE Southern Natal Nomads played its January game at Umdoni Park last week. The A division was won by Lorenzo Gallino (who also had the longest drive), with Donovan Currie the runner-up.
Jimmy Spear won the B division, with the runner-up Andrew Pastellides. In the C division Charles Mostert dominated (he also won the over 55s), with Neil Oberholzer the runner-up.
Tie awards were given to Jesse Verster (15 years), Mark Pereira (15), Trevor Vosloo (10), Brendan Botha (5), Andrew Pastellides (5).
Vinesh Naidoo had a tough day, with most ‘golf ‘. The worst playing fourball was Roelof Meyer, Rob Harrison, Devlyn Fraser and Vinesh Naidoo.
Best visitor was Jean-Marc Bouic.
Nearest the pins were Vaatjie van der Watt (7th), Donovan Currie (12th) and Dick Mol (16th).
Best drawn fourball was Dick Mol, Jimmy Spear, Pete Stoppel and Brendan Botha.
Best gross was recorded by long-hitting Jarrod van Wyk.
Best playing pair were Charles Mostert and Barry Elliott, runners-up Brian Jolliffe and Peter Thomson.
Best playing fourball was Ralph van den Berg, Des Sutherland, Melville Muir and Neil Fleming.
