Case closed for McDermott
JAN McDermott started terribly but finished well to win the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Closed at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday.
The Margate Country Club player made a double bogey on the first hole despite taking an iron for safety. However, he fought back by reeling off birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 5th and another on the 7th.
He eventually carded 70 and then 71 in the afternoon to win by one from defending champion Leorin Pillay of Umdoni Park, who had 69 and 73.
The course was playing magnificently well and McDermott holed putt after putt. Nishalin Nelson was third on 75 and 70. His shot of the day was a 6-iron on the 8th hole. He completely misread the wind and his ball crashed through the foliage and ended up on the 9th tee. It certainly made for an interesting second shot.
Sean Baker was fourth on 72 and 74, producing very steady golf. Had he holed a few more putts, or missed less, he would have been in contention. Phil le Roux was next on 74 and 73 although he will consider this a slightly disappointing return.
Next were Patrick Mavundla (77 and 72) and Altaaf Bux (75 and 74). Mavundla had a superb afternoon round, while Bux was working off some obvious rust. Ronnie Mtshaka had 80 and 72 on a course he likes, while Van Zyl Greyling, who produced a coat-hanger of a tee shot for his opening hit, recovered to have 78 and 76. That’s not really doing his talent much justice, but he looks to be on an upward curve.
David Rush and Naude Barkhuizen tied for 10th on pairs of 78s. Barkhuizen is new to the scene and his progress will be closely monitored.
The teams to play the opening league games are as follows: premier – Leorin Pillay, Nishalin Nelson, Phil le Roux, Altaaf Bux, Sean Baker, David Rush, Elvis Khawula and Van Zyl Greyling. They play against Toti at Margate on February 9.
The central league team plays Central Durban at Cotswold Downs and comprises Patrick Mavundla, Ronald Mtshaka, Douglas Sima, Simon Lee, Jarrod van Wyk, Gary Purtell, George Bothma and Naude Barkhuizen.

Mixed proves popular

GEORGE Haynes carded nett 70 to win the individual Stableford at Southbroom Golf Club last Wednesday. Derek James was second on nett 71, followed by Gary Purtell, George Haswell and Peter Volck on nett 72. Saturday’s comp was won by Russell Johnson and Vic Pretorius on 46 points, followed by three pairs on 44 points.
They were Graham Taylor and Vic Pretorius (pivot), Jonathan Shaw and John Scott, and Rob Meydell and Ossie Osbourne.
The women’s section was won by Margi Bonini and Di Morris on 45 points, with Heather Anderson and Rene Matthew next on 43 points. In third place were Lorraine Cook and Pam Quarmby on 42 points.
The Sunday mixed proved popular and was won on 92 points by chairman Joy Crutchfield and her team comprising Janet Humphrey, Ken Alford and Tilly Nel. In second place on 91 points were Roger Phillips, Heather Anderson, Jonathan and Liz Shaw, counting out Vic Pretorius, Jeanne Powell, Rene Matthew and Chris Miller. In fourth place on 87 points were John and Maeve Mullane, Ian and Maeve Holmes.

Jacky clinches victory

JACKY van Heerden won the comp at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday on 40 points. In second place was Trevor Green on 39 points, followed by Andrew Morgan on 38 points.
Saturday’s bonus bogey was won by Daan Swanepoel and Rob Calder on +13, followed by Trevor Green and Don Currie on +9. They counted out Ernst Meier and Fanie Kuhn.
They were followed by Thys Blom and Johann du Plessis, as well as Gavin and Jarrod van Wyk. One shot further adrift were Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp on +7. The monthly mug is the coming Saturday, February 1. The course is in excellent condition.

Jane and Gabriella win

THE women’s betterball at Margate Country Club last Tuesday was won by Jane Davies and Gabriella Schmidt on nett 62, followed by Margaret Ford and Corrinne Greensmith on nett 64.
The Wednesday Wobblers’ alliance, two to count, saw Frans Berend, Dave Morrison and Otto Mutschler clean up on 89 points. In second place were David Botha, Dieter Berend and John Barker on 88 points. Third was snapped up by Dave Parsons, Dave Boyd and Derek Young on 87 points. The Arthur Tomlinson floater went to John Gibson, Eddie Pyle and Weels Dryed on 69 points.
The Thursday pro shop comp was won by Roy Knight and Jim Finn on 81 points, with Jim Finn and Alan Davies second on 74 points. Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Patrick Mavundla. Saturday’s comp was won by Graham Scowby and Ron Scowby on +11, on a countout from Jane Davies and Allan Halvorsen.
The Sunday mixed comp was won by Maureen Ogilvie, Graham Massam, Wayne and Joan Minnaar on 95 points, well clear of Jannie and Ada Brits, Johann and Lesley Erasmus on 88 points. They counted out Eddie and Anita Scheepers, Joe and Rina Rito.

Pro-Vision gears up

THE seventh annual general meeting and tournament of the Pro-Vision Golf and Social Club will take place at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday, February 2.
The tee-off time for the tournament is at 8am which will be followed by the AGM commencing at 2pm. New players willing to join the club are most welcome to attend.

Phil fires at San Lameer

SAN Lameer Country Club’s monthly business day took place last Friday.
The winners, on 96 points, were PC Volschenk, Johan Erasmus, Marius Visser and Philip le Roux, who fired a 68 gross off his two handicap.
In second place were Louis Verreyne, Eddie Horn, Meyer du Toit and Coen Griesel on 87 points.
They were followed by Rodney Lowe, Frank Carr, James Fergus and Koos van Goevenden on 85 points.
Nearest the pins were Philip le Roux (4th), John Mullane (9th), Philip le Roux (14th), Johan Erasmus (16th).
Longest drives on the 3rd were struck by Andrew Curlewis and Sophie Peridon.
