Drivers rev up for radio control champs
As defending champions, the radio control racers will be out in full force later this month.
IT was very windy for electric on-road racing at Banana County Radio Control Racing Club’s monthly meeting at Douglas Mitchell Sports Club.
Six different classes took part and young Gregory Botha was welcomed as a new driver.
In the Concourse Class, Charl Kriek was judged to have the nicest looking car.
As the new laptop could not be made to work with the decoder, Kitty and Dennis Steenmans jumped in and did manual scoring. Instead of three qualifiers, the club ran two qualifiers with one final.
The club is taking part in the KwaZulu-Natal Championships later this month in Camperdown and the drivers needed to polish their set-ups and driving style. As defending champions, they will go out in full force to try and keep the title for 2014.
In Open Stock, Dwaine de Winnaar dominated the class and was six seconds short of his 15th lap with Sean Baxter finishing second and Tristan Baxter third.
The M-Chassis mini class is always popular and one of the more difficult classes to drive as it is front-wheel drive. Dwaine showed his talent by winning this class. Nimrod Maritz, racing this class for the first time, had to find his way in the qualifiers, but gave Dwaine a good go in the final and finished second with only 0.6 of a second difference. Sean Baxter finished third.
In the novice class Tamiya Touring 01 Stock, Jan Eloff showed a good improvement and led the race from start to finish. Jacques du Plooy had a bit of drama in qualifying but drove his final in style to finish second with Charl taking third.
Tamiya Touring 01 Modified showed that Nimrod still has his driving talent. He finished 14 laps in the lead. Jeff de Winnaar, a much improved driver, finished second and Dwaine third. Tristan Baxter tested his Super Stock Touring car by running with them.
1/10 Pan and 1/12 Pan were run by father and son team, the Baxters. Sean took honours in both.
The club thanks Jan for fixing the extension lead and Dennis for his excellent commentary. The next race meeting takes place on Sunday, March 2 at 3pm. Spectators are welcome.
