Women to descend on Margate
THE club is hosting the women’s South Coast Meet this Sunday. A total of 84 players will be involved and the golf will be followed by the annual general meeting.
The winners of last Tuesday’s women’s alliance were Jane Davies, Chiapinni Boshoff and Gabriella Schmidt on 78 points.
They were followed by Joan Minnaar, Elgin Berend and Anne Williams on 77 points.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by Dave Boyd, Rolf Spielmann and Robert Henning on 86 points, followed by Louie Kuhn, Jan Richter and Roy Knight on 85 points.
In third place were Dave Morrison, Freddie Boshoff and Rob McGill on 84 points.
The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to John Barker, Faan Berens and Peter Bellew on 69 points.
Thursday’s comp was rained out. Last Saturday’s comp was won by Dawie de Villiers and Ken Ashington on 53 points, with second place going to Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp on 45 points, counting out Okkie Wannenburg and Dawie de Villiers.
The women’s comp was won by Hilary Hendry and Margaret Ford on 44 points, on a countout from Barbara Jackson and Jane Davies.
In third place on 43 points were Shannon Gottlieb and Connie MacArthur, and fourth went to Una McLachlan and Hester Gasson on 41 points.
Shushas shine at Southbroom
THE Old Mutual International Pairs club qualifier was won by Derek Shusha and Simon Shusha on 48 points last Saturday.
They narrowly beat two pairs on 47 points, namely Jim Cook and Russell Johnson, as well as Malcolm Greenland and George Haswell.
In the women’s section the competition was won on 48 points by Mari Fielden and Karen Bridgeford, who qualify to play in the regional final on July 7.
Runners-up were Pam Quarmby and Joy Crutchfield on 46 points, followed by Augustine D’Ewes and Lorraine Cook on 45 points.
The previous Wednesday’s competition was won by John Scott on 43 points, with Bruce Matthew, Dries Barkhuizen and George Haynes all having 42 points. Paul Cole claimed fifth place on 40 points on a countout.
Janet Humphrey won the women’s competition on 40 points, with Heather Anderson next on 39 points, Lorraine Cook on 38 points and Mogie Moodley and Christa Sistermanns on 36 points.
It’s time for the Victory Cup
PORT Shepstone Country Club will be playing the Victory Cup this Saturday, February 8.
Club captain Roy Matkovich explained that Jon-Jon McKenzie, who was a prime mover at the club in the 1930s, donated a sailing trophy he had won to the club.
The story goes that Jon-Jon said members would put the playing for it on hold as World War II had broken out. “We’ll play for it when we’ve won the war,” is what he said.
The original winners, back in around about 1945, were Mr and Mrs Guy Payn.
The event is a mixed greensomes, although technically plays as a pinehurst, but who’s counting. So both players will tee off, then play each other’s drives, and choose the best ball from there.
It should be great fun.
Meanwhile, Gavin van Wyk shot a tidy 75 off his eight handicap to win the Auto Exec monthly mug last Saturday. Phil Myburgh was the runner-up on nett 72.
The B division was won by Christo Janse van Vuuren on nett 67, edging out Gerald Koch who had nett 68.
Leif Holmstedt claimed the C division spoils on nett 70. Pete Stoppel was second on nett 70.
Mike Pillay won the individual Stableford on 39 points, with Jenny Hulley second on 38 points.
Last Wednesday’s combined Stableford was won by Paul Bunge and Joan Shanks on 69 points, followed by Jess Verster and Kevin Loring on 65 points.
Dress in red and white for the business day on Friday, February 14 (Valentine’s Day).
There will be special prizes (and menu) on offer on the day.
