SKZN records seven-wicket victory
The side earned a bonus point for getting their target in less than 20 overs.
THE Southern KwaZulu-Natal XI boys playing at PSCC recorded the third win in the Premier League last Sunday, beating African Warriors.
The visitors were sent in to bat and brilliant bowling from openers Hennie van Jaarsveld (seven overs, two for 15) and Eugene Naude (eight overs, two for six) claimed four wickets for just 21 runs in 15 overs between them. The spinners took over and dried up the runs even more. Raja Kazi bowled well, taking three wickets for 16 runs in 10 overs. The Warriors were bowled out for 84 runs.
In reply, the SKZN XI lost three quick wickets for just 17 runs. Ashley Lombard decided to take the game to the visitors, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and finished unbeaten on 52 runs. He was well assisted by Gareth Bishop, also unbeaten, on 21. SKZN won by seven wickets and picked up a bonus point for getting the score in less than 20 overs.
In local cricket, the Knights played against the Hibiscus Colts at DMCC. The Colts went in to bat and posted 148 all out. Bryce Allchin (31 runs) and Jason Marx (18 not out) were the pick of the batsmen, with 40 extras being bowled by the Knights. Mohammud Asif took five wickets for 16 runs in 10 overs.
Knights made difficult work of the low total. With a good start, they were looking to cruise to victory, but the wickets started tumbling as the Colts fought back with some good bowling from Kyle Foggan (four wickets for 23 runs in seven overs), Leon Kruger bowling nine overs for only 12 runs and MJ van Rooyen (three wickets for 49 runs in seven overs). Losing nine wickets in the process, the Knights eventually scraped through to win by one wicket.
Junaid Manzoor (41 runs) and Uzair Desai (25 runs) were the pick of the batsmen for the Knights.
DM Colts travelled to Sezela. Sezela won the toss and decided to bat first. The Colts’ bowlers restricted Sezela to 96 all out. Dirkie Botes (three wickets for 33 runs), Juandre Koekemoer (two for 27) and Jaco Otto (two for five) were the pick of the bowlers. Mike Hooper top scored for Sezela with 28 runs.
Sezela opening bowler Paul McGough contained the Colts taking three wickets for 28 runs in eight overs. However the Colts managed to pass the score with five wickets down, Louis Allison (24 not out) and Russell Hughes (25 not out) steering the ship home.
PSCC played against DMCC Old Boys at Creston College. DM Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat first. Gershion Lawrance batted brilliantly, scoring 80 runs with wickets tumbling all around him and DM Old Boys were bowled out for 157 runs. Keith Evans picked up four wickets for 23 runs in five overs.
In reply, PSCC batsmen just could not get going, the red ball was swinging beautifully in the humid, overcast conditions and the wickets kept tumbling, PSCC being bowled out for 86 runs. Matt Louw top scored with a few lusty blows, ending unbeaten on 46. South African women’s player Nikita Sole bowled well, picking up five wickets for 20 in six overs. DM Old Boys won by 71 runs.
