MIKE Anthony produced one of the rounds of his life at Southbroom Golf Club, to clinch the 11th annual Southbroom International Shoot Out for the Afro Scots, last weekend.
Nicknamed ‘Zorro’ when he had long hair, due to his Antonio Banderas similarities, he probably now more closely resembles Magnum PI, with his short hair. Whatever the case, he blitzed around in 67 last Sunday, scoring a mammoth 48 individual points off his seven (cough, cough) handicap.
The funny thing was that he kind of topped his first shot of the day, on the 10th, and needed to use a 7-iron to reach the green for two. His teammates, Colin McKay, Gary Purtell and Janet Humphrey were more than just a bit pleased with the birdie barrage produced by ‘Manthony’. He actually outdid himself – his team won by six points. He could have relaxed with two holes to go.
There was some discussion about the huge plaster Mike was sporting on the back of his neck after, whether or not it was legal, or gave him an unfair advantage. Truth be told, he’d had a worrisome growth removed, which clearly didn’t affect his game. “I didn’t have to chip,” he said, explaining his success. His favourite football team Arsenal then completed the perfect day for him, beating Liverpool to advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
As always the tournament was played in great spirit, with the Wild Boys from Irene leading the way.There were teams from around the world, including England, France, Scotland, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Wales and Northern Ireland, and of course, Johannesburg.
There was some good individual scoring as well, with Gavin Sole having three rounds under 70, including five birdies in a row from the 5th to the 9th during one round. Naude Barkhuizen, only 14-years-old, had rounds of 78, 72 and 73, showing that he is one to keep an eye on.

Saturday’s comp, aside from and including the Shoot Out, was won by Geraldine Treherne and Lizzie Currie on 50 points. In second place were Phil Verwey and Peter Brandsma on 49 points, with Vic Pretorius and Naude Barkhuizen next on 48 points. In fourth on 47 points were Richard Bridgeford and Kerry Fielden on 47 points.
The previous Wednesday’s competition was won by Eileen Neilson on 39 points, by one from Janet Humphrey. In third place was Sharon Turnbull-Jackson on 37 points, with Ruth Mosburger and Jenny Westray next on 35 points. The men’s section was won by Jannie Ackerman and Rolf Probst on 50 points, by three from Gordon Moody and Geoff Skelton. In a tie for third on 46 points were Malcolm Greenland and Colin McKay, as well as Richard Derman and Kerry Fielden.
Margate Challenge launched for 2014

THE official launch of the 2014 Margate Challenge, which will be played from April 3 to 5, took place at the club on Monday evening this week. Halfway Toyota has come on board as the main sponsor once again, following on the success of the inaugural tournament last year.
One of the attractions is the chance to win a Toyota Corolla. This will be given to the first golfer who aces the 16th on the final day. Tournament organiser Cedric Smith thanked the Jones brothers, Brian and Mark. “Last year was a great success and we’re hoping for bigger and better this year, with the event including bowls and bridge as well as the golf,” he said.
Club chairman John Webster thanked Cedric for his commitment to the event, despite having relocated to Umdoni. He also thanked Halfway Toyota for its contribution of R30 000 and was confident the sponsor would get a positive return. He then surprised Brian Jones, by bestowing honorary membership upon him, and Mark, who is currently away.
There were more surprises, with Hibiscus Coast Municipality mayor Cynthia Mqwebu also receiving honorary membership of the club. She had rushed back from meetings in Pietermaritzburg to attend the launch. “The town and this club have a special place in my heart,” she said, thanking the club for the invite. “I can see that golf brings great enjoyment, especially to those who are a bit older,” she said, with a twinkle in her eye. It certainly brought a laugh and set the event off on the right tone. Mrs Mqwebu also hinted afterwards that she would hit a few practice balls before hand in the event she is asked to hit the opening shot!
In regular news, Margaret Ford won the women’s individual Stableford at Margate Country Club last Tuesday, carding 37 points. In a tie for second place were Shannon Gottlieb and Jean Page on 36 points, with Agnes Spielman next on 35 points. The Wednesday Wobblers’ comp was two to count, with multiplication on the par fives.
In first place were Keith Duncalf, Roy Knight and Dieter Berend on 94 points. Second spot went to Mario Gruber, Frank Merrill and Derek Young on 89 points, followed by Peter Rogers, Tony Comte and Frans Miryr on 87 points. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Jim Smith, Eric Fielder and Piet Pretoriusmon 60 points.
Thursday’s pro shop comp saw Neil Townsend clean up on 43 points, by two from Friedl Kotzbauer. In a tie for third on 40 points were Mike Lee and Jaco Vorster. Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Dennis Rehbok.
The club hosted the ‘AGS Kerk Dag’ last Saturday, played as a betterball Stableford. It was won by Doug Johnston and David Botha on 49 points, followed by Alan Davies and Jim Finn on 48 points. In third place on 47 points were Johan Erasmus and Marius Visser, followed by Piet Pretorius and Frank Merrill, as well as Cyril and Corinne Greensmith on 46 points. There was a tie for sixth on 45 points, shared by Margaret Ford and Hilary Hendry, as well as Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp.
Nearest the pins were won by Neil Townsend (2nd), Wayne Minnaar (4th), Angus McLachlan (8th), A Walton (11th) and Wayne Minnaar (16th). Longest drives on the 17th were struck by Corinne Greensmith (women) and Sbu Ntozakhe (men).
The annual Noel Edwards betterball trophy was played for last Sunday and won by Graham Massam and Maureen Ogilvie on 47 points. In second place were Friedl Kotzbauer and Derek Egerton on 44 points.

JOHANN van Niekerk and Kevin Loring won the competition at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday. They carded 46 points to edge out John Pritchard and Dave Milne who had 45 points.
Friday’s business day was sponsored by Abingdon Spar and had a Valentine’s Day theme. The mystery holes were the 9th and 14th. The winners were Gerald Koch, Koos Fouche, Dave Milne and Roly Shaw on 98 points. They counted out Koko Zithumane, Ronnie Mtshaka, Sipho Nxumalo and Vusi Maphumulo. In third place on 97 points were Ian and Joan Shanks, Ralph and Sue van den Berg.
Saturday’s comp was won by Roly Shaw on 43 points, with Louis Klopper next on 42 points. Yzelle Greyling and Charles Mostert tied for third on 41 points.
