THE Blue Ocean Aquatics swimmers performed well at the KZN Level 1 Championships at Kings Park in Durban last weekend.
With only seven swimmers, the club still managed to place 11th out of 24, winning four gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals.
The highlight of the swim was winning the girls’ 11-12 200m freestyle relay.
The swimmers not only won medals but had huge improvements in their times and with that came more qualifying times to be able to attend regionals in Bloemfontein.
Carla Kretzschmar won gold in the 50m breaststroke and silver in the 200m backstroke event.
Tamara Venter improved on her times by 100.38 seconds, including 38.09 seconds in the 400m freestyle where she won a silver medal.
Marzelle de Beer won bronze in both the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle, with an overall improvement of 15.18 seconds.
Skye Schlebusch was the fastest seeded 11-year-old for the 50m butterfly event. She went out like a speedboat to win the gold by improving on her time by 1.58 seconds.
Kayla Heydricks secured herself a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and a bronze in the 50m backstroke. She was also able to improve her times by an outstanding 31.57 seconds.
Rudi Steyn won a gold medal, swimming against his brother JayDee, who pushed him to a winning time of 1.13.73 in the 100m freestyle.
He also won a silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 100m butterfly.
The swimmers are now looking forward to the regional and national meets coming up in March.
The club’s Junior Splash Gala is set for March 8.
